Going the Distance in Memory of Molly, Mary and John

While I am not running the Boston Marathon this year, my commitment to raising funds for Expect Miracles Foundation continues.  I will once again be participating in the Distance Challenge, a global "get moving" challenge to support our SAMFund program for young adult cancer survivors and cancer research at Dana-Farber and Memorial-Sloan Kettering.

100% of every participant-raised dollar goes to EMF’s mission.  In my role as the Director of Programs, I have the privilege of leading our grant program that provides financial assistance to young adult cancer survivors as they rebuild their lives after treatment. This work is incredibly close to my heart, as three of my siblings—Molly, Mary, and John—were diagnosed with cancer as young adults.  The need is so great and there are few options for young survivors to turn to for support.   That's what makes this program so important.

I hope you'll consider making a gift to support our mission and to give hope to those facing an uphill climb.  As John would often remind us, where there is love, there is hope.  Let's keep showing up and sharing love!

With gratitude,
Jennie

My Updates

Day 1 Update

Tuesday 12th May
We've made it to Day 1 of EMF's Distance Challenge.  Thank you so much for your generosity and support so far this year!   With over 2000 participants this year, EMF has raised almost $1.2 million dollars well on our way to reach the goal of $1.7 million this year, a new record! Every dollar raised goes directly to support EMF's three funds for young adult cancer survivors and cancer research.  I am off to a great start, too, thanks to the generosity and kindness of so many of you!

Update on Goals
40 mile distance goal: 6+ miles so far
Fundraising goal of $25,000: $17,782

We did an EMF team walk around the Esplanade in Boston today to kick off the event, logging 5.5 miles together with the mission in mind.  So thankful for a beautiful spring day here.  I am trying to frontload some mileage over the next few days because we'll be celebrating a college graduation over the weekend and want to be focused on family when we are together. I will squeeze in the steps when I can!

How your Donations Help
I am proud to share that this spring, EMF awarded just over $300,000 in grants to young adults who are in need of financial support as they recover from cancer treatment.  This age group is hit harder than any other given the precarious timing of a diagnosis.  It's an uncertain time in the best of circumstances.  One recipient told us:

I literally cannot put into words how much this grant will help me. It's not everything I need but it will make actually living a possibility. I just lost another job due to my health and I have been so terrified of how I would be able to still have a home. This grant is making that possible. I am sobbing accepting this award because it is saving my life.

It makes every step worthwhile and I can't thank you enough for helping make this work possible through your support.  I'll be plugging away at miles over the next 8 days, inspired by the young adults we help, those who are currently going through treatment and their families who support them, and my family.

Help me Got the Distance!

Tuesday 14th Apr
From May 12-19, I've committed to covering 40 miles to raise funds for Expect Miracles Foundation to support young adult cancer survivors as they recover from cancer and cutting-edge cancer research.  While it's not 26.2 miles, after a long year, 5 miles a day may feel like 1000 miles!!  After so many years of generosity and giving, I continue to ask for support because the need continues to grow!

Why I Am Participating
  • Young adults under the age of 40 who are diagnosed with cancer experience financial toxicity at rates higher than any other age group
  • Most resources to provide support don't extend once treatment is complete but the physical and financial side effects linger long after treatment is complete and young adults struggle to get back on track.
  • At Expect Miracles Foundation, we provide financial assistance grants through our SAMFund to help young adults get back on their feet after treatment.
This is the work I do each and every day.  Over the last 3 years, I've read hundreds and hundreds of stories of young adults who have been knocked off their feet financially because of a cancer diagnosis.  Missed work, limited savings, young families, increasing expenses.  The need is real and it is expansive.  We are one of the only organizations that provides support once treatment is complete and I am proud to represent EMF in the 2026 Distance Challenge.

To say I am grateful for the continued gifts would be an understatement. Over 13+ years of fundraising, this community has donated more than $500,000 to support cancer research and support and that is just mind-blowing.  I wish that there was an end in sight and until we reach that point, I'll continue to do what I can to help move the needle forward.

You all know my motivation and that will never waver.  I do this in memory of Molly, Mary and John in hopes that a family in the future doesn't even consider what could have been without research and unending support of family and friends.

To support this year's goal, you can make a gift online on my page.  If you want to join us for the week, please register and set a goal that works for you! Fundraising is not required and I would love to share some miles with you!

My sincerest thanks for the generosity shown year after year.  I see every day how your gifts make a difference.  We are the change.

It breaks my heart every time I see “Molly, Mary, and John.” It’s unfathomable. I’m glad you’re getting to participate in this way. I have less experience with young cancer (thankfully). I had never considered the need you’re addressing. Way to go!
